SIBEL THRASHER AT HERMANN'S JAZZ CLUB

Album Cover

Recently, I learned of the passing of Sibel Thrasher on April 9, 2020. This audio recording of a gig we did at Hermann’s Jazz Club in Victoria on November 25, 2009 is being posted as a tribute to her memory. The recording is unmixed, unmastered, and unedited except for the order of the tunes.

Musicians on the date were myself on piano, Alex Olson on Bass and Mike Griner on drums, both of whom have consented to have the recording released. It shows Sibel at her best.

I had the opportunity to work with Sibel on several occasions. We did some jam sessions at Rossini’s, a gospel workshop in Vernon, Jazz Vespers at St. Andrew’s Wesley, 2 concerts on Galiano Island, a show at the Arts Club, a performance at a ballet school, as well as this date. Throughout my time working with her, she was always ready to work, on time and on pitch, and incredibly engaging with her audience. She was a joy to perform with and I am much richer for playing for her. She worked with many pianists in her lifetime. I was lucky to be one of them.

Reducing free-lance performing for the past few years in Victoria I lost touch with Sibel. With the pandemic, our family tried to reach out to old friends. I spoke with Sibel less than a week before she died. It is sad that she passed at the relatively young age of 67. But, with people like Sibel in our lives, “I think to myself. What a wonderful world!” - Peter Dent
